We love dogs here at DeNooyer Chevrolet. Many of our staff are proud dog owners and we love visits from 4-legged friends here at the dealership. Dogs are such a staple in many families, but sadly, many dogs find themselves homeless and in shelters, including senior dogs. November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month and National Senior Pet Month, and we are exciting to be spreading awareness with the Mr. Mo Project!

“Seniors make up the bulk of the 1.2 million dogs put down at shelters every year in the U.S.” (via thedodo.com – 2/24/17) Senior dogs are unlikely to have the adoption success as their younger counterparts. Due to advanced age, many senior dogs have costly health problems, which can even be the unfortunate reason they end up in shelters in the first place. With limited room in shelters, as well as treatment costs, many senior dogs meet their fate in the shelter, scared and alone.

Through the experience of losing their own beloved senior dog, Mr. Mo, Chris and Mariesa Hughes learned how much of a financial impact a senior dog can have on a family. The Hughes had to sell their hot tub to pay for one MRI scan Mr. Mo needed; this doesn’t include all the other expenses in finding out a diagnosis and treatment. After Mr. Mo’s passing, Chris and Mariesa wondered how many senior dogs were being surrendered at shelters simply because their owners couldn’t afford their care. To honor Mr. Mo, and save senior dogs from being alone during their end-of-life journey, Chris and Mariesa began the Mr. Mo Project in 2011, and set out to make sure they could give senior dogs homes full of love during the rest of their time on earth.

The organization currently has 102 dogs in foster homes; all with a variety of issues including blindness, oral health issues, diabetes and paralysis; where they will stay until going to the Rainbow Bridge. Chris and Mariesa personally care for 16 senior dogs in their Clifton Park home. Caring for these fluffy friends is expensive, with vet bills costing $35,000 per month on average. Additional costs include transportation, food, beds, toys, treats, collars and leashes. Multiply the additional costs by 102 and you can see how The Mr. Mo Project can use your support. Everyone involved with The Mr. Mo Project is volunteer; opening up their homes, hearts, and time, with no expectations of reimbursement, except in the form of returned love and gratitude from their senior foster. Since beginning their efforts, The Mr. Mo Project, has been featured in People and on thedodo.com. The Huffington Post has named them a Top Rescue Group, and locally, they have been recognized by the Animal Protective Foundation with the Humane Hero Award.

Throughout the entire month of November, DeNooyer Chevrolet will make a $20 donation, to The Mr. Mo Project, for EVERY new OR used vehicle purchased! No matter what you are looking for, we can help, and you in-turn can help make sure senior dogs spend the end of their lives in a home filled with warmth, love, and excellent care. You can also choose to make an additional donation at the time of your purchase or make your donation through Facebook or The Mr. Mo Project website. We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with The Mr. Mo Project. We encourage you all to consider adopting or fostering a senior dog of your own. For information on how to get involved, visit The Mr. Mo Project website and make sure to Like their Facebook page and Follow them on Instagram. Now, let’s save some senior shelter dogs!
